Global warming

Positive Proof

Climate change. Some  need absolute proof, beyond any doubts, that Global Warming exists. It is like the sky is falling and they are waiting for more evidence of what is happening. Do you know what the absolute proof is for these people – the sky hitting them over the head!

But then there is not much time left to react. From what I know there is a consensus among main stream scientists that Global warming is a fact of life now. But let us assume for the moment that Climate Change has not been proven beyond the reasonable doubt. So what?

Tell me what is wrong with trying to reduce pollution, to conserve energy, to use alternative energy sources, to stop deforestation, to save the environment, to breathe clean air, eat healthy food, to swim in clean water. What is wrong with energy independence that, by the way, would improve our security? Let us assume that we created this new economy that improved our quality of life. Let us imagine that the new economy is serving our needs and not the needs of big corporations. What is wrong in knowing that we helped future generations, our children and grandchildren, to live healthy lives on our little blue world, the only home we have? What stays in our way? What prevents us from accomplishing this?

Republicans deny climate change

I can't hear you!

Greed, selfishness, short sightedness, lust for money and more money, our Congress that is for sale to the highest bidder.  Are we so selfish and short sited that we want to insist on “our way of life” just to prove our freedom and independence? What is this freedom anyway? Are we free enough to decide what needs to be done to ensure the future of our country? Are we brave enough and independent enough to buy a more efficient car instead of an SUV that neighbors are driving?

Side effects of pesticides.

Roundup

Plant pathologist and retired Purdue University professor Don Huber has written a letter to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack warning that a newly discovered and widespread “electron microscopic pathogen” appears to significantly impact the health of plants, animals, and probably human beings.” He said the pathogen appears to be connected to use of glyphosate, the key ingredient in Roundup.

President’s Cancer panel which bluntly blames chemicals for the staggering prevalence of cancers – raises profoundly challenging questions about the chemical and  genetic-engineering practices of industrial agriculture. The challenge, if it holds up, has implications not just for agricultural institutions, but also for the primary food chain serving the Earth’s population.
Huber spoke about a range of key factors involved in plant growth, including sunlight, water, temperature, genetics, and nutrients taken up from the soil. “Any change in any of these factors impacts all the factors,” he said. “No one element acts alone, but all are part of a system…When you change one thing,” he said, “everything else in the web of life changes in relationship.”
That brought him to the subject of glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide, most commonly recognized in the product named Roundup®. Because it is so widely used, Huber said, it is having a profound impact upon mega millions of farm acres around the world. More than 155 million acres of cropland were treated with glyphosate during the 2008 growing season, and even more by now. Subsequently, Huber said, this chemical is having a sweeping impact on the food chain.
He asserted that glyphosate compromises plant defense mechanisms and thereby increases their susceptibility to disease. He said that it reduces the availability and uptake of essential nutrients, and that it increases the virulence of pathogens that attack plants. Ultimately, Huber said, all of these factors reduce crop vigor and yield (Yield Drag).
While the pathogen is not new to the environment, Huber said, it is new to science. This pathogen apparently increases in soil treated with glyphosate, he said, and is then taken up by plants, later transmitted to animals via their feed, and onward to human beings by the plants and meat they consume.
The USDA was being asked to approve unrestricted use of genetically engineered alfalfa seeds, which could result in as many as 20 million more acres of land being sprayed with up to 23 million more pounds of toxic herbicides each year.
Because alfalfa is pollinated by bees that fly and cross-pollinate between fields many miles apart, the biotech crop will inevitably contaminate natural and organic alfalfa varieties.
Huber said laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of the organism in pigs, cattle and other livestock fed these crops, and that they have experienced sterility, spontaneous abortions, and infertility.
His message of urgent concern and the need for delay until more research was completed was unwelcome in many corporate and university citadels, and was deemed heresy by some vested in the multi-billion dollar industry of GMO crop
The extensive use of glyphosate is leading, Huber argues, to weaker and more disease-prone plants, animals, and people. In his presentation, he offered a list of about 40 diseases that, he says, tend to increase in farm fields where glyphosate is used.
Those plant diseases include Sun Scald, Leaf Chlorosis, Tomato Wilt, Apple
Canker, Barley Root Rot, Bean Root Rot, Wheat Take All, Wheat Head Scab, Wheat Glume, and Grape Black Goo.
Subsequently, he hypothesized, the decrease in nutrients and the increase in the new pathogen in food lead to empty calories, which likely explains increases in allergies, and chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
The list of diseases that Huber suspects may be affected by glyphosate and the new pathogen is, he said, increasing as growers and pathologists recognize the cause-effect relationship:
Increase in cancers of the liver, thyroid, kidneys, tests, and skin melanomas.
Increase in allergic reactions in general, and an increase of up to 50% in soybean allergies in the USA in the last three years.
Increase on an epidemic-scale in the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease, perhaps as much as 9,000% over the last 30 years. Specialists say they expect the incidence of Alzhiemer’s to spike far higher over the next four years.
Increase in the incidence of Parkinson’s disease, which researchers say, is being provoked in part by the factor of chemical pesticides.
Some crops have been genetically engineered to be resistant to Roundup. Such crops allow farmers to use glyphosate as a post-emergence herbicide against both broadleaf and cereal weeds, but the development of similar resistance in some weed species is emerging as a costly problem.
“Slow down,” Huber said. “It takes time to restore soil biota if a field has been treated with glyphosate. We have 30 years of accumulated damage, so it may take some time to remediate all of this.”
“Before we jump off the cliff,”  Huber said, “we need to have more research done. It takes a lot to reverse the problems.” Many observers would argue,
convincingly, that we have already jumped off the cliff.
Please be aware af potential harm from genetically engenerd crops and herbicides like the Roundup.
Get educated, learn how to read product labels to avoid GE products.
Take control. Don’t trust Monsanto.
And the latest news: Monsanto has revealed that a common insect pest has developed resistance to its flagship genetically modified (GM) product in India. The agricultural biotechnology leader says it “detected unusual survival” of pink bollworms that fed on G M cotton.

Food crisis

Hungry

In this eleventh video in the series “Peak Oil and a Changing Climate” from The Nation and On The Earth Productions, analyst, author and founder of the Earth Policy Institute Lester Brown discusses how unprepared the world really is for the growing effects of climate change. “Economists doing supply and demand projections are largely unaware” of the scale of the resource crises facing the world, Brown says, and “food is going to be the weak link for our civilization as it was for so many earlier civilizations.”

2011 has just begun and yet we are already seeing significant price shocks and serious food shortages in many areas of the globe.  In fact, violent economic riots are now being reported in Algeria, in Chile and in Mozambique.  Food shortages and price increases are also causing political unrest in other nations such as India, Bangladesh and Indonesia.

The United Nations is projecting that the global price of food will increase by another 30 percent by the end of 2011.

I know that we will not stop making junk food voluntarily.

But when the catastrophe hits junk food will be the last thing on our minds.

We will eat anything we will be able to find.

And cannibalism is not an exception.

So please don’t buy junk food in any form or shape. It is better for you and for our Planet.

The 2 poles, yin (expansion) and yang (contraction), are complementary and antagonistic.

The Balance.

Yin and yang ?

Chinese philosophy has always been intrigued with balance: night and day, high and low, winter and summer, dark and light, black and white, left and right, false and true, female and male.  The yin and yang represent the negative and positive forces in the universe and the “dynamic balance of opposites”.

The 2 poles, yin (expansion) and yang (contraction), are complementary and antagonistic. Yin and yin repulse one another, as do yang and yang, but yin and yang attract one another. One can get an actual picture of these relations by playing with two magnets.  The study of macrobiotics consists therefore in identifying these forces and their interaction. In human life, yin and yang can be identified on a multitude of levels, but mostly, as far as we are concerned, in the nervous system division between parasympathetic nervous system – yang- and sympathetic nervous system – yin. The balance between the two is paramount to the maintenance of good health.

man and woman

The idea is that our diet will influence how we feel,- our health, our well-being. Modern symptom-conscious society, however, has gotten away from that idea and the common belief is that if there are no symptoms manifested, there is no sickness. But people are moving back to those beliefs as the macrobiotic lifestyle is becoming more prevalent. People are more interested in natural holistic approaches.

The word macrobiotic comes from the Greek macro, meaning large or long, and bios, or life. Macrobiotics is a lifestyle and dietary philosophy that promotes health, longevity and healing, through a largely plant-based diet. It is a complex science involving diagnosis, lifestyle and nutrition
One goal of modern macrobiotics is to become sensitive to the actual effects of foods on health and well-being, rather than to follow dietary rules and regulations. Dietary guidelines, however, help in developing sensitivity and an intuitive sense for what sustains health and well-being.
Some Japanese macrobiotic theorists, including George Ohsawa, stress the fact that yin and yang are relative qualities that can only be determined in a comparison. All food is considered to have both properties, with one dominating. Foods with yang qualities are considered compact, dense, heavy, hot, whereas those with yin qualities are considered expansive, light, cold, and diffuse. However, these terms are relative; “yangness” or “yingness” is only discussed in relation to other foods.
Buy Local and In Season
Today “local” means grown within 500 miles of where you live; the idea being that you will be eating foods natural to your environment, and vital nutrients will not have aged out of your food by the time it reaches your table.
Thought is important, but diet is key to establishing good blood, which irrigates the brain and ultimately influences ideas, aspirations, behavior and many oher other manifestations. Food is more than just fuel for our daily life. It’s our connection with the natural environment, something we have to study, understand, and apply to our diet.
Yin and yang food

Yin and Yang

Depending on climate and personal needs, moderate amounts of animal food can be consumed along with these staple foods. In general the smaller the animal, the better. The more ancient the species, the better (i.e. fish) The wilder the the better.

Brown rice and other whole grains such as barley, millet, oats, quinoa, spelt, rye, and teff are considered by macrobiotics to be the foods in which yin and yang are closest to being in balance. Therefore, lists of macrobiotic foods that determine a food as yin or yang generally compare them to whole grains.[6]
Nightshade vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggplant; also spinach, beets and avocados are not recommended or used sparingly in macrobiotic cooking, as they are considered extremely yin. Some macrobiotic practitioners also discourage the use of nightshades because of the alkaloid solanine, thought to affect calcium balance.
Cooking according to the time of the year

Drugs to make kids taller
Suddenly the stakes on this issue have been raised considerably: A new federal Food and Drug Administration warning indicates a possible 30 percent increased risk of death to children treated with height-boosting drugs.
Are a couple of inches are worth the $150,000 some parents pay for this “treatment.” (Why not put it in an annuity for the child?)
And how our insurance systems getting talked or tricked into paying for this “treatment.”
Cadaver HGH (Human Grows Hormone)
In 1985, we learned that a significant number of people treated with cadaver HGH died of the incurable brain disease Creutzfeldt-Jakob.
Drug companies create the need to be able to sell the unneded products.
Since then, drug companies have used engineered bacteria to make recombinant human growth hormone, or rHGH. Now it’s clean, pure and plentiful. Good news?
Well, not entirely, because companies go in search of markets, and sometimes even create them. And that’s what happened here.
Some children are short because of underlying medical conditions. But even in those cases, when they are given HGH to make them taller, the injections do nothing to treat their medical conditions. It’s just vertical cosmetics.
Targeting the short child through drugs makes no sense, especially since rHGH usually doesn’t even make treated children average-height; it just makes them a bit less short.
Don’t trust the FDA
So imagine the shock to many pediatricians and ethicists — but the drug companies’ delight — that the FDA has repeatedly approved this use for pediatric vertical cosmetics.
Studies show that children treated this way are either no better off or are left worse off in psychological health. What about their physical health? As noted above, the FDA recently issued a warning relaying findings from a French study that suggest a 30 percent increased risk of death.
Finally, the family also needs the FDA’s help, to stop allowing children to be used as marketing sites for drug companies that have an interest in seeing us all conflate average with healthy. Children cannot afford us to confuse cosmetic differences with meaningful medical benefits.
In my opinion in most cases the parents are the ones in need for help.
Like drugs to make them smarter and to know better not to ruin their kid’s health.
And to learn that healthy diet and regular exercise can help kid to get taller and helthier.
Now about some other manifestation of stupidity in parents
In spite of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recommendation against women under age 18 getting breast implants, buying implants for a daughter’s 16th birthday has now become fashionable and even expected.
The Food and Drug Administration lists 25 complications, including pain, inflammation, calcification, chest wall deformity, toxic shock syndrome, wrinkling and scarring. Most patients later have to have second or even third operations because the implants do things like move or break open. The surgery can later interfere with mammography, increasing the chance that a tumor will go undetected. And women who have the surgery are less likely to have enough milk for breast-feeding.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) found that women with implants were twice as likely to die from brain cancer, three times as likely to die from lung cancer, and four times as likely to commit suicide,
The FDA says about 40 percent of augmentation patients have at least one serious complication within three years.

Healthy life style

Healthy lifestyle

We have 3 kids and 2 grandkids.

And the best we can do for them is to teach them how to stay healthy and to help them to get a good education.
And it is troublesome and dangerous that some parents prefer to give their kids artificial and superficial exterior enhancements and not healthy and happy lives.
We should teach our kids that exercise, healthy diet and good education are the keys to full and happy life.

The use of CT scans has exploded. In 1980, 3 million CT scans were performed. The projection for 2011 is 72 million, nearly 20,000 every day. Between 2000 and 2005, Medicare spending on CT scans more than doubled.
Radiation from CT overuse

Any Iodine Pills left?

This CT explosion has raised questions in medical circles whether radiation associated with CT scanning may result in increased cancer risk, especially in children. The typical CT scan exposes a patient to more radiation than chest X-rays, mammograms or airport scanners. A full-body CT scan for a serious trauma patient delivers an amount approaching the annual dose limit of radiation exposure for radiation workers.

There is no good epidemiologic data at present, but researchers extrapolating exposure from atomic bomb survivors at Hiroshima and Nagasaki have theorized thousands of people might develop future cancers from CT scan radiation. This is not yet a reason for patients to avoid CT scans, but it is a reason for physicians to be concerned.
It took only one generation for CT scanning to revolutionize medicine, yet its very success has created uncertainty over what its precise role is in patient care. Answering these questions is paramount to that determination.
Here in the USA reaction to disaster in Japan:
radiation panic in the US

Any Iodine Pills?

-High demand for gas masks and pet shelters at RDD USA Military Surplus ‘getting towards sales levels of 9/11′

-U.S. Surgeon General warns Americans to ‘be prepared’ for harmful radiation from Japan to hit West Coast
-Nukepills.com sells 250,000 potassium iodide pills while Anbex gets three orders a MINUTE instead of per week
-Packs of 14 pills that usually cost $9.99 changing hands on Amazon.com and eBay for $250 to $400
-Geigercounters.com begs people not to place any more orders after it sells out of radiation detection gadgets
-Some worried people stocking up on seaweed, red wine, vodka, bread and chilli peppers as preventative measures
-Surge in purchases of gas masks and emergency survival kits including food, water and space blankets reported
Panic

The end is coming!

Are we stupid here? So easy to get frightened? Are we so afraid of our lives that we are ready to panic at the slightest chance of a problem? Are we Americans so weak?

Shouldn’t we worry more about the CT scans that we are so ready to use?
Is there any sanity here?
Most likely we are in more danger from our cell phones than from disaster in Japan

The convenience of leaf blowers comes at a cost to your health, the nation’s energy supplies, and your wallet. Communities throughout the United States and Canada have restricted their use, and some, like Palo Alto, California, have banned them outright. Here are some facts about leaf blowers that you ought to know.

Part of the problem with these time-saving devises is the noise that they create.

Noise pollution

#@%@!!! leaf blowers!

The noise from leaf blowers can reach 90-100 decibels at the operator’s ear. According to the World Health Organization, there is an increasing risk of irreversible hearing damage from noise above 75 decibels.
The noise pollution would not be so bad, of course, if people were the least bit considerate about when they use the leaf blowers.
But there is more!
From Haighland Park Board of health:
Gas-powered leaf-blowers also generate an incredible amount of air pollution for their size, which is not good, but it is not the worst air polluting problem with the blowers.

Noise and air pollution

Leaf blowers are back!

The worst air pollution problems with the gas-powered leaf-blowers is that they create airborne stuff that would normally remain on the ground, where it would not be inhaled by innocent passers-by.
These include mold spores, allergens, dried animal feces, and fine particles that increase the number and severity of asthma attacks, cause or aggravate bronchitis or other lung diseases, and reduce our ability to fight infections. The EPA and the California Air Resources Board, in their brochure “Particulate Matter Air Pollution: A Threat To Our Health,” advise us: “Avoid using leaf blowers.”
Please watch this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsJPXV3PecE

Leaf blower motors are large emitters of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and fine particles (PM2.5) too small to be eliminated by the body’s defenses. The gas-oil mixture that fuels two-stroke engines is especially toxic. The Lung Association reports that a leaf blower motor releases as much smog as 17 cars. This pollution is known to cause cancer and cardiopulmonary disease.

Leaf blowers do not help to meditate.

Leaf blowers have been shown to cause serious damage to soil and landscape plants with their dust-laden, 200 mph, hurricane-force winds, which cause dehydration and leaf-burn, retard new growth, clog leaf pores, and spread disease spores, insect eggs, and weed seeds.

There is, in fact, a simple path to a perfect and guilt-free lawn: the rake. Yeah, it takes longer. And guilt alone may not be enough to make you embrace a rake. So when the leaves fall, remember that the extra hour or two spent on old-fashioned yardwork yields some very modern benefits:
Get rich: The initial expense of up to $500 for a blower plus regular gasoline refills (or electric bills) adds up quickly. A great rake costs only about 25 bucks, can last for decades, and requires an occasional hand swipe to remove stuck leaves.
Please contact your local sity Goverments and demand the ban on leaf blowers use.
