Vitamin K may reduce cancer risk: EPIC study
By Stephen Daniells, 30-Mar-2010

Consuming foods rich in vitamin K2 may reduce the risk of cancer, says a new study supporting the potential anti-cancer benefits of this emerging nutrient.

Results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study found that the highest intakes of vitamin K2, but not vitamin K1, were associated with a reduced risk of both overall cancer and cancer mortality, with the latter reduced by about 30 per cent.

There are two main forms of vitamin K: phylloquinone, also known as phytonadione, (vitamin K1) and menaquinones (vitamins K2). K1 is found in green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, broccoli and spinach, and makes up about 90 per cent of the vitamin K in a typical Western diet; while K2, which makes up about 10 per cent of Western vitamin K consumption and can be synthesised in the gut by microflora.

There are various forms of menaquinones, and these can also be found in the diet: Menaquinone-4, for example, can be found in animal meat, while menaquinones-7, -8, and-9 are found in fermented food products like cheese, and natto is a rich source of menaquinone-7.

Maintaining intakes
The new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, appear to support the anti-cancer benefits of vitamin K2, with the majority of the nutrient being consumed from cheese.

The study adds to an ever-growing body of science supporting the benefits of vitamin K2, most well established for bone and cardiovascular health. Emerging evidence also supports a potential role for reducing the risk of prostate cancer.

Interestingly, Joyce McCann, PhD, and Bruce Ames, PhD, from the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute reported last year that current recommendations for vitamin K are not being met, placing people at increased risk of age-related diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
Current recommendations are based on levels to ensure adequate blood coagulation, but failing to ensure long-term optimal levels of the vitamin may accelerate bone fragility, arterial and kidney calcification, cardiovascular disease, and possibly cancer, wrote the researchers in the October 2009 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
New data
The new study, led by Jakob Linseisen from the German Research Centre for Environmental Health, analysed data from 24,340 participants aged between 35 and 64 participating in the EPIC-Heidelberg cohort study.
The participants were following for over 10 years, during which 1,755 cases of cancer were documented. Of these 458 turned out to be fatal cases. Results showed that people with the highest average intakes of vitamin K2 were 14 per cent less likely to develop cancer, compared to people with the lowest average intakes.

Furthermore, a 28 per cent reduction in cancer mortality was observed for people with the highest average intakes.

Dr Linseisen and his co-workers also report that significant associations with prostate cancer, as observed in previous studies, meant that the cancer risk reduction was more pronounced in men.

Here is the superior product: Isotonix® Vitamin D with K2
Is Isotonix Vitamin D with K2 safe for people on anti-coagulant medications?
Some studies have concluded that vitamin K2 does not interfere with anticoagulant medications. However, most products containing vitamin K (including K1 and/or K2) warn users taking anticoagulants not to take the product. If you are currently taking warfarin or another anticoagulant medication, you should consult your physician before taking any product containing vitamin K1 or K2.

Statins, Cholesterol, and Heart Disease
Statins are popular cholesterol-lowering prescription drugs prescribed for patients with high cholesterol levels, which are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Lipitor, Zocor, Lipex, Crestor, Torvast, and Lipostat are some of the more popular statin brands, prescribed currently for high-cholesterol conditions. Over the past two decades, statins have become one of the best-selling drugs in the pharmaceutical history. In fact, a few doctors even suggested starting to use them in drinking water. About 36 million Americans currently seek statin drugs. But some health experts have seriously questioned the harmful side effects of statins and cautioned against its use.
Side Effects
Muscle pain and weakness are the most commonly reported side effects associated with regular statin use. These result due to the depletion of a pro-muscle nutrient, called CoQ10, by statins. In severe cases, this condition can grow into a fatal muscle-wasting condition called rhabdomyolysis. Amnesia (memory loss), fatigue, dizziness, and depression are other common side effects resulting from statin use. Quite a few studies also claim a connection between statins and cancer as well as congestive heart failure

Here is a better way.

What effect does exercise have on glucose levels? It is quite easy to manage diabetes when you incorporate a program for exercise in your daily routine. Such exercises have been shown to have positive effects for people who are suffering from diabetes, especially those who have low glucose levels. One example is exercise being able to channel muscle energy, convert it into glucose and then using that glucose as fuel. At the start of it, the body will just use the glucose that has been converted into glycogen from one’s muscles. Glucose is also found in your bloodstream. If you maintain a long term exercise program, it is highly likely that the levels of your blood glucose will not dip. Also, glucagon and other hormones found in your body will also be released. These hormones and glucagon work together and break down all of the liver’s stored fat and then converting such stored fat into more glucose. It is best that you engage in exercise frequently, because your body will improve. It will develop a sensitivity to insulin, as well as help you gain better control of the body’s glycemic index.

Why is the effect of exercise on glucose levels important to those with type 2 diabetes?Exercise indeed has a good effect on a patient’s glucose level. This is good news for people who have type 2 diabetes. A lot of research indicates that patients of diabetes gain more control over their glycemic as soon as they get used to a regular exercise program. On the other hand, people who do not engage in exercise find no improvement on their glycemic control. Since exercise improves your insulin sensitivity, you will also need less medicines in order to control the levels of your blood sugar.

Should patients with type 2 diabetes exercise more often or differently than otherwise healthy people? To maintain general health, experts recommend at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 90 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity spread over 3 or more days per week. There are no separate recommendations for those with diabetes. What type of exercise is best for type 2 diabetes patients? In light of this, the frequency of the routine is more important that the kinds of exercise one engages in. There are many researches wherein an abundance of benefits result from both weight training as well as aerobic activity. When should patients be discouraged from exercising? If you are high risk for cardiac arrest or engage in too stressful exercise, you should get cautioned and adapt to it slowly.

The debate is raging on how to help sick people. I do not hear a lot about how to help people not to get sick. In a long run this is the way to cut costs.

About health care. Again. And about personal responsibility.

Here is the plan. Get educated in what you eat, when to eat and how often you eat. Watch what you drink. Information is available: Watch the movies: Sicko, Food. Inc, Sweet Misery, World According to Monsanto, Eating.

Exercise regularly. Why do some people take pills every day but neglect to exercise?  It is much cheaper than paying for medications and doctors.I would ban escalators in US for the first three floors. Use your legs, they are designed for it.I have noticed that when I go to the gym, people go up the escalator, work out and go down the escalator.Only in America.People drive their kids a half a block to the school bus stop, kids sit on the bus, sit at school, go back home, sit on a bus or in a car, to sit on the TV or computer. Bus exhaust spoils the air we breathe.

We can stop buying Arab oil if we just used common sense and use our body’s abilities to move by itself. And we would save a bunch on health care, because if we would not be so lazy, we would have health not sickness. And because we would get healthier, we will not be stressed out so much about the health insurance cost.

Our doctors. The doctors are leally between the rock and the hard place. The system forces doctors to do many things that good for insurance companies and pharmaceuticals, not what is good for the patients.Trust yourself more than your doctor. I meet my doctor in the gym. Every time he seems to be surprised that I am in a better shape then he is. Why is he surprised? Have you seen doctors that look worse than their patients? Next appointment, pay attention to the shape your doctor is in. Does your doctor look healthy? If not – change your doctor. How can doctors help others if they cannot help themselves?

Eat in moderation.Do not pig out. You’re supposed to enjoy your meal, not destroy it. Do not worry; you will have food to eat, if you will get hungry. Vote with your wallet; do not buy junk, especially for kids. Sugar drives them crazy. It is not ADD or ADHD, it is sugar and lifestyle. Kids need to exercise. They need to use their energy. It is OK if they get a few bumps and bruises. Our kids get sick all the time by being around other kids – cold, ear infection, pink eye, etc. We understand the dangers and are used to it.But it is OK for them to get sick, why are we afraid of bumps and bruises? Bumps and bruises do not create chronic diseases, constant cold and infection do.

Take control of your life and your health. Do not count on doctors, government and insurance companies to do it for you. Because if we do, we are not any better than a chicken in one of the industrialized farms.  The difference is, we have a choice.

I showed this letter to my daughter who is a teacher. That is her opinion: Hi pop,  Here is this letter.  It sounds a little like you are preaching to your audience.  People do not like to be lectured to.  Just a thought.  Also, I can’t say I agree with the section attacking doctors.  It’s an awful lot like the attacks on teachers.  You know?  The “I know better than the professionals” kind of thing that drives me crazy.  I agree with the overall theme of what you are trying to say, but try reading it with a critical eye.

The Truth About Vitamins & Supplements
by Ronnie Cummins, National Director, OCA

The Organic Consumers Association is proud to announce a new nationwide campaign called Nutri-Con: The Down Side of the Vitamin & Supplement Industry. Nutri-Con will expose the hazards and limited effectiveness of synthetic vitamins and supplements, and strive to create mass consumer awareness and marketplace demand for truly organic, “naturally occurring” vitamins, botanicals, and supplements.
Part of this campaign will be the implementation of a new set of Naturally Occurring Standards (NOS), certification procedures, and labels which are truly “organic and beyond,” and to expose the fact that 90% or more of the vitamins and supplements now on the market labeled as “natural” or “food based” actually are spiked with synthetic chemicals.

A major underlying theme of this campaign will be to steadily inform and remind consumers that Big Pharma’s prescription and over the counter drugs are generally hazardous substances offering no real solution to our health problems; while preventive health and wellness promotion, traditional holistic remedies, and complementary medicine practices represent the “organic road” to health.

I do not use cosmetics. I have a beard. That does it for me.It is the information for girls who sometimes overdo it. Just let you natural beauty shine. Here is the good source of information on healthy (and not so healthy) products.I don’t know how accurate the scores are.

Given the incomplete information made available by companies and the government, EWG provides additional information on personal care product ingredients from the published scientific literature. The chart below indicates that research studies have found that exposure to one or more ingredients used by this company — not the products — caused the indicated health effect(s) in the studies reviewed by Skin Deep researchers. Actual health risks, if any, will vary based on the level of exposure to the ingredient and individual susceptibility — information not available in Skin Deep.

Scientists are increasingly observing a connection between oral health and heartsmile.jpg conditions. In a study published in the International Journal of Cardiology, researchers looked at two groups of patients—those who had suffered a recent heart attack and a control group—and found that the heart patients had noticeably worse oral health compared to the controls. This doesn’t prove that bad teeth and gums caused the heart attacks, but it does indicate an association between the two.

How might oral health affect the heart? In gingivitis, the milder form of gum disease, infection leads to chronic inflammation—gums are swollen, red, and sometimes bleeding. In periodontitis, the more severe form, the infection affects the bones that support the teeth, leading to tooth loss. In both cases, disease is caused by an accumulation of bacteria, or plaque, in the gums. These organisms release toxins that can circulate around the body.

In particular, the body’s arterial system may be affected. Multiple studies, including a recent report in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, display a startling correlation: The more severe the gum disease, the thicker and harder the walls of the arteries. This is true even for young, healthy adults with no other symptoms of heart problems. Narrowing of the arteries (or atherosclerosis) is a key component of heart disease.

We Aloe Vera juice. Good for the digestive system and I think it is also good for your gums.

So what accounts for the hike? Obesity, heart disease, diabetes—you name it. As studies began linking fatty diets to a litany of maladies, meat eaters started looking for an alternative to beef, and chicken farmers began cranking out the birds. Not long after, pork was relegated to its inferior position as “the other white meat.”
But as chicken sales took flight, there was another trend dominating American eating habits. That was the growth of a monolithic restaurant industry that now pulls in about half of our total food dollars. And the battle to get the biggest share of those dollars led to some unsettling practices. Innovative restaurateurs began adding flavor by injecting salt and monosodium glutamate. They rolled chicken in breading, dropped it in hot grease, marinated it in oil, and smothered it with cream and butter—all the while still promoting the idea of a “healthy” alternative to beef.
Looks like we should have listened to Alfred Hitchcock. When he filmed The Birds in 1963, just as chicken sales were starting to climb, he must have been trying to warn us about what we were up against: killer birds. Don’t believe it? Take a look at the sorry state of chicken today, compliments of Eat This, Not That! and the new New York Times bestseller Cook This, Not That!
